The theme of CHRYSALIS 2011 was "Leading your Community".

Students examined the importance of cultural identity, genealogical identity and environmental conservation in communities and the role leadership has taken in the past and may take in the future.

Chrysalites were asked three major questions:

  • How old do you have to be to be a leader?
  • Are leaders born or made?
  • Why is community leadership more important than ever before?

The key note speakers for CHRYSALIS 2011 were Chief Wilton Littlechild (former Canadian Member of Parliament), Sir Tāmati Muturangi Reedy (former Chief Executive and Secretary of the Department of Māori Affairs), Jack Manning Bancroft (CEO of the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience) and Lisa Spengler (Conservation Volunteers Australia).

Time was also spent using "Business Island", a virtual business simulator that tested their business skills and ethics.

On top of their academic studies, Chrysalites visited Australia Zoo, joined an Indigenous Culture night, went to a Bush Dance, took a guided bus tour of Brisbane and held an International Culture night to celebrate and learn more about each others' home countries. Chrysalites also helped restore one of Brisbane's parks, joining Conservation Volunteers Australia in spreading mulch and planting trees.
